Barcelona 4-1 Roma: Catalans make UEFA CL history in big win

Barcelona made their own little piece of history on Wednesday by becoming the first team to ever have five own goals scored for them in a Champions League season after forcing AS Roma to commit two own goals in an emphatic 4-1 win over the Italians in their UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg fixture at Camp Nou.

just the fourth side in Champions League history to score two own goals in a single game and the first since Galatasaray in September 2015 against FC Astana.

One hour into the first leg, Barcelona could start thinking about the semi-finals after going 3-0 up, no thanks to two own goals by De Rossi and Manolas before Gerard Piquetapped into an empty net from about three yards out after Luis Suarez forced a good low save from Alisson Becker.

With ten minutes left on the clock, substitute Stephan

el Shaarawy held off his marker to roll the ball into Edin Dzeko , who slammed past Marc-Andre ter

Suarez completed the rout with his first Champions League goal in over a year. Denis Suarez played in a cross which was

to the Uruguayan who fired home from 14 yards out.

Sergio Busquets and Nelson Semedo were the big names to return for Barcelona. Busquets returned after several weeks out with a toe injury, while Semedo made his first appearance in over a month, having finally recovered from a hamstring problem.

Semedo’s inclusion at right-back allowed Barca to revert to a 4-4-2 formation, with Sergi Roberto protecting the Portuguese out wide in an otherwise full-strength Catalansline-up.

Roma, on the other hand, were without their midfield marshall Radja Nainggolan and man-of-the-moment Cengiz Under. In their places were Lorenzo Pellegrini in the middle and Alessandro Florenzi pushed up to the right wing.

Barcelona ran out 6-1 winners when they last hosted the Giallorossi in the Champions League back in 2015, but the latter overcame Atletico to reach the knockout stages and subsequently the last eight for the first time in 10 years.
